Edinburgh’s Community Mushroom Farm and Education Project

Our Farm

We turn trash into food. In 2021, we built a mushroom farm inside a 40 ft shipping container using upcycled materials wherever we could. Our mushrooms are grown on local business waste that would otherwise end up in landfills, including: sawdust, coffee chaff, spent brewer’s grain, and cacao husks.

Our Worksh0ps

We run both indoor and outdoor workshops on how to grow mushrooms at home and in shared community spaces. Over the last year we developed ‘Mushroom Alchemy: How to Grow Oyster Mushrooms From Household Waste’, where we cover all you need to know to get started growing mushrooms in your home from materials that you would usually throw in the bin and send you home with everything that you need to do so.

Community Events

We like our mycology with a dash of good wholesome fun. Whether it’s a gig, a talk from a leading mycologist, or a meet-up for mushroom nerds - the aim of our events is to create an accessible space for our community to come together, learn from each other, and get organised.

Our projects

With help from funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, we’ve been able to work with different community groups to incorporate mushrooms into outdoor and disused spaces. In one such project we teamed up with Friends of Dalry Cemetery to transform an empty crypt into a mushroom grow space for the Dalry community.

“The Rhyze team have shown an unfailing commitment to education and sustainability as well as inclusion, accessibility and enjoyment. I’m so appreciative of the welcoming, community-centred spirit of Rhyze and the transparency and openness of their organisation. “

Our Shop

Support our mission to build a radically different food system - and get some cool art while you’re at it.

We believe in paying artists fairly for their work, which is why we split all proceeds from our poster sales with them 50/50.
