Mushroom Tincture Recall – Important Information and Updates

Affected products: Rhyze mushroom tinctures sold between 01/01/2025 and 01/10/2025

We are recalling these tinctures because of an issue with one of our suppliers.

15/10/25

What Happened

Our tinctures are made using ethanol to extract and preserve the beneficial compounds from our mushrooms, and it’s come to our attention that one of our suppliers misrepresented their ethanol as certified food-grade and has been operating without proper checks and certifications. There are concerns that the ethanol is not produced in the UK and does not meet UK standards for food-grade ethanol. The supplier is now under investigation.

Guidance

This information came to me by way of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH). They recommend that people stop using anything that has been made using this ethanol and that the remaining contents be disposed of by pouring them down the drain with plenty of water.

NIMH has further advised that we reassure anyone who has been using the tinctures that the risk of harm is very small.

I have reached out to the NIMH, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Citizens Advice for further guidance. So far none of these organisations have had any additional information to share and/or we are still waiting to hear back, but we wanted to let you know promptly so you can take the recommended actions.

Our Response

We are sorry that this has happened, and as a cooperative we are learning from this experience and  working to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again. We have vetted alternative suppliers and have found a new, verified food-grade ethanol from a reputable source that is used by medical herbalists that we personally know and trust.

We will be making replacement tinctures using this new ethanol that will be ready on the 27th of October and we would like to send you a replacement tincture as soon as they are available. If you prefer, we will refund your order.

As a small non-profit community organisation, it would help us enormously if you choose the replacement option, as refunds for this situation are not covered by insurance and we’re unlikely to recover losses from the supplier. However, please do what feels right for you. We completely understand and will honour either choice. Either way we are grateful for your understanding and support.

What you should do

If you have bought a tincture from us in 2025, please:

1. Stop using the tincture immediately
2. Dispose of it by pouring it down the drain with water
3. Let us know by via email whether you’d like a replacement or a refund. If the former, where you would like it posted.
