The Enclosures
‘The Enclosures’ limited rural people’s resilience and independence by depriving them of common, shared resources, such as the pastures and forests which they relied on for much of their food. For capitalism to succeed, nothing could be free and everything had to be for sale, paid for with wages from exploitative labour.
Food Justice 101
Food justice is a framework for analysis & action. It emerged in the United States along with the movement for environmental justice as primarily Black communities began organizing to expose the ways in which systemic poverty & exclusion were leaving them exposed to a corporate food system pushing cheap empty calories.
Join the LWA!
We are proud to be members of the Landworkers’ Alliance - a labour union representing land-based workers committed to agroecology - from organic farmers to sustainable foresters and urban mushroom cultivators too.
Oyster Mushrooms
All Oyster mushrooms belong to the genus Pleurotus – a Latin word meaning to grow sideways, describing a key trait of oyster mushrooms: that they tend to grow sideways out of vertical trees or stumps. Ostreatus is Latin for Oyster, reflecting this particular mushroom’s iconic oyster-like waved caps and silver shimmering colour.
